Dutch Cities Among Europe's Priciest for Renting

4/13/2024

Four Dutch cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht, have secured spots among the ten most expensive cities for renting in the European Union, as per findings from the housing platform HousingAnywhere. Amsterdam specifically clinched the title of the priciest city to rent in across the EU.

HousingAnywhere's latest International Rent Index for Q1 2024 zoomed in on EU cities, evaluating rental rates for apartments, rooms, and studios across 28 European urban centers. The study revealed an overall uptick of 3.8 percent in rental prices across these cities, indicating a widespread escalation in rental costs throughout the EU region.

While the report noted a gradual slowdown in rent hikes, it underscored the persistent strain of inflation on tenants and the potential risk posed by escalating construction expenses to cities' housing expansion initiatives. HousingAnywhere emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between industry stakeholders and policymakers to ensure the timely execution of housing supply expansion plans, crucial for alleviating long-term pressure in Europe's rental markets.

In Amsterdam, the average monthly rent for an apartment stands at approximately 2,275 euros, significantly surpassing the rates for studios (1,740 euros) and rooms (963 euros) in the same city. Despite these steep prices, Amsterdam isn't alone in facing affordability challenges. Other major European cities such as Paris, Munich, and Utrecht consistently rank among the top ten priciest cities across various types of rental accommodations, reflecting ongoing affordability issues in the Netherlands and Germany.

The HousingAnywhere International Rent Index for Q1 2024 identifies the following cities as the EU's most expensive for renting:
