Dutch Supermarkets Break Revenue Records in 2023 Amidst Rising Prices
1/18/2024
Dutch supermarkets experienced a remarkable surge in revenues in 2023, reaching unprecedented levels, according to recent data released by market research bureau NielsenIQ (NIQ). The combined revenue of Dutch supermarkets witnessed an 8 percent increase over the past year, surpassing the 50 million euros mark.
Contrary to expectations, this surge in supermarket revenues was not attributed to an uptick in the volume of goods sold but rather to a substantial increase in the prices of supermarket products. The first half of 2023, in particular, saw the most significant surge in prices.
During the initial six months of the year, essential items like sugar, bread, and olive oil experienced notable price hikes. This trend, coupled with the challenges supermarkets faced in coping with escalating energy bills, led to additional costs being transferred to consumers throughout 2023. The increased cost of raw materials, exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine, also played a pivotal role in driving prices higher.
A noteworthy factor contributing to the heightened prices of supermarket goods was the increased cost of labor for supermarket chains. In June 2023, many supermarket employees witnessed a substantial wage increase of approximately 10 percent, significantly impacting the overall cost of groceries.
According to Marten Suurmeijer, a researcher at NIQ, the impact of this wage increase was felt due to the long-term contracts that supermarkets typically engage in. He explained, "Supermarkets usually enter into long-term contracts, and that means a fall in energy or raw material costs is not immediately noticeable in the pricing. It will play a role once the time comes to negotiate new contracts with providers."
Moreover, the 10 percent rise in wages for supermarket staff, implemented in June of the previous year, played a significant role in the observed price hikes. Suurmeijer noted, "You can take it as a given that those costs are also factored in."
As Dutch supermarkets continue to navigate these economic challenges, consumers are left to grapple with the consequences of higher grocery prices, reflecting the intricate dynamics at play in the nation's retail landscape.
